FOR NEARLY A CENTURY (CIRCA 1916), 95% OF FOSSIL SPRINGS HAD BEEN DIVERTED THROUGH A 14 MILE FLUME TO POWER ARIZONA'S FIRST HYDROELECTRIC WATER PLANTS. FOSSIL SPRINGS IS ACTUALLY MANY SPRINGS, WHICH PRODUCE AN ESTIMATED 20,000 GALLONS OF WATER EVERY MINUTE! DUE TO WESTERN GROWTH, BY THE 1990'S, THE FLUME PRODUCED LESS THAN 1% OF ARIZONA POWER SUPPLY.
ON JUNE 18, 2005 - THE ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE (APS) DECOMMISSIONED THE POWER PLANTS, AND RESTORATION BEGAN.

Get ready for a SHOCK! Fossil Springs was closed from 08/18/2008 until 01/01/2009, so that the historic water flume and the top 14ft of Fossil Dam could be removed in Year-4 of this major restoration project to reclaim nature.
