The Sierra Nevada's in California entice with a beauty that will have you shopping at REI for a backpack. Go Virtual Hike with us 12 miles from North Lake (9350ft elevation), up through Piute (pie-yoot) Pass (11,423ft elevation) to Hutchinson Meadow (9490ft elevation) on our first of five days backpacking through splendor of crystal clear blue lakes, snow capped mountains, cascading waterfalls, blooming wildflowers....and it only got more beautiful with each mile. Hutchinson Meadow to the Muir Ranch follows rapidly flowing streams with amazing waterfalls. Go Virtual Hike with us 11+ miles, as we met up with our Sierra San Gorgonio buddies at the John Muir Trail junction, and travel to Muir Ranch to pick up our food drop supply and ship back un-needed supplies.

08/31/2006 Muir Pass to LeConte Canyon -
(Day 4 of 5) Backpacking Sierra Nevada's California

This section of the Sierra Nevada's was for me the most stunning and edging toward brutal. Evolution Lake, Sapphire Lake, and Wanda Lake are breathtakingly untouched, pristine lakes that leave you awestruck with their beauty. Go Virtual Hike with ME 12+ miles, starting around 9660ft elevation up to Muir Pass (11,955ft elevation) thru hail and slippery snow banks, and down to Big Pete Meadow (9200ft el) where I met up with the Sierra San Gorgonio group who pulled me off the trail with Hot Chocolate and Hugs. The fifth and final day in the Sierra Nevada's tantalized with beauty, and taunted with rugged terrain as the day with the most extreme elevation changes. Go Virtual Hike with us as we start from Big Pete Meadow (9500ft elevation), down 2 miles to the LeConte Canyon junction to Dusy Basin (8750ft) - then UP 3222ft elevation in another 6 miles to Bishop Pass (11,972ft elevation!) - then DOWN 2204ft another 6 miles to South Lake (9768ft elevation).  (photos by Nunya)

Day 4 of 5 starts at our camp at Guitar Lake (11,460ft) - and ascends up the backside of Mt Whitney 3045ft to the Whitney Summit at 14,505ft. Go Virtual Hike with us 3.3 miles from Guitar Lake to Trail Crest (13,700ft) - continuing another 2.1 miles to the Whitney Summit - and returning another 4.6 miles down 2505ft to Trail Camp (12,000ft) at the base of Whitney - for a cumulative total of 10 miles.
